It’s beginning to feel like a new feature of the business cycle: Every few years or so American companies and consumers embrace the concept of green business. We’re certainly in the midst of one of those moments right now. But something seems different about our current green awakening.

This time, the action is being driven as much by markets as morality. High oil prices, global warming, the sense that chemicals cause real harm and the earth’s resources are indeed finite–these are not so much charitable causes to embrace as they are problems that entrepreneurs can solve. Wall Street and Silicon Valley certainly understand this: Venture capital firms invested $958 million in renewable energy companies in the first half of 2006 alone.

Today’s green revolution is being driven by a whole new set of entrepreneurs. We asked our staffers and contributors to find the most intriguing ones out there; then we narrowed the list to the 50 in the pages that follow–The Green 50. The range of businesses is astonishingly wide, from high-tech firms making big bets on the future of energy to decidedly low-tech concerns that are simply determined to find a different way to do business. What their efforts add up to is a new way to think about being in business. We’re betting that most of them will be around for several business cycles to come.

The role: Green Business and Operations Strategy Associate

As an Associate in Green Business and Operations Strategy, you’ll be responsible for defining and implementing the environmental strategy for Google’s global offices and employees. Google strives to have the most innovative and impactful environmental practices and is looking for a savvy and energetic professional to help achieve these goals. Sample projects include: building the strategic framework to guide Google’s investment in on-site renewable power generation, devising and implementing green benefits programs for employees, and identifying and executing on opportunities to improve energy efficiency. Requirements:

* At least 2 years experience in clean technology, building systems, and/or energy infrastructure. Consulting experience a plus.
* Demonstrated knowledge of environmental & cleantech fields.
* Proven track record driving projects to completion in a challenging and dynamic environment.
* Excellent problem-solving, analytical, modeling, and presentation skills; programming skills a plus.
* Sound business judgment with professional distinction in thought leadership and innovation.
* Solid communication and interpersonal skills; ability to be personable yet persistent.

Monitor market conditions and analyze transactions to assist with executing potential energy trades

President-elect Barack Obama said on the campaign trail that spending $150 billion over the next decade to boost energy efficiency
would help create 5 million jobs in fields ranging from wind-turbine builders to insulation installers who make houses more energy-efficient.

The numbers are debated by experts and among Obama’s advisers, and are likely to spark debate when Congress considers a stimulus package including green jobs. But a big government push focused on jobs in clean energy industries could be the best chance in years for renewable energy
and energy efficiency to take root in the United States.

Still, critics say that analyzing only green jobs misses part of the story. “It’s not looking at the other side of the coin: You are spending more money for your energy,” said Anne Smith, vice president at consulting firm CRA International. The consulting firm wrote a report for the coal mining industry in April saying that, under a cap and trade global warming bill, gains in green jobs would be “more than offset” by job losses in other sectors. That bill failed, but Obama has said he supports capping emissions (Jeffrey Ball, Wall Street Journal [subscription required], Nov. 7).

The Obama Plan Says: Help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.

Where are the green job opportunities: $15 billion dollars a year to support clean energy will be a boon for renewable energy companies. Solar, wind, and geothermal will all benefit from increased financing. In solar look for opportunities in thin-film companies like Nano Solar and Mia Sole, in traditional solar companies like Suntech, Sharp, Sun Power, and large utility scale solar plants developed by companies like E-Solar and Ausra.

Jobs in wind development include developers of wind farms as well as the companies that are producing the equipment. US companies like GE and European manufacturers including Vestas and Gamesa are all ramping up operations in the US to produce and sell more turbines.

The Obama Plan Says: Put 1 million PlugIn Hybrid cars — cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon — on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America

Where are the green job opportunities: The biggest buzz around Hybrid are batteries, and companies like A123Systems
have raised a lot of money from the venture community. There are also innovative companies building new car’s like Tesla and new ways to think about transportation like Better Place

The Obama Plan Says: Ensure 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025. Implement an economy wide cap and trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050

Where are the green job opportunities: Right now there are already voluntary markets for carbon trading in the US. With a national cap and trade system, billions of dollars will be flowing between power plants, investors, and the government. This means if you are on wall street and looking for a job, this could be a booming area. In London finance companies ranging from Goldman Sachs to Climate Change Capital have built practices around Kyoto.

States like New Jersey already have burgeoning Renewable Energy Credit markets, these will only grow if we get a national renewable portfolio standard.

The Obama Plan Says: Develop and Deploy Clean Coal Technology

Where are the green job opportunities:This goes hand in hand with Carbon Markets. By pricing carbon, the economics of clean coal technology and carbon capture will improve dramatically. The government will be spending money on new carbon-capture projects. Clean coal companies like Coal Tek are exploring ways to make the source of 50% of our electricity cleaner.

The Obama Plan Says: Encourage Energy Efficiency and Conservation, Reduce Demand 15% by 2020

Where are the green job opportunities: Energy efficiency is the cheapest and easiest way to reduce our carbon footprint. Some opportunities are very local and hands on, like Energy Service Companies that manage buildings electricity usage through the use of energy efficient lighting, mechanical and other techniques. Others are more technologically intensive like demand response companies that will work with utilities to manage customer power use through the grid.

Once building takes off again, green building and energy efficient building and techniques will have a giant impact on the economy. From LED lightbulbs to high efficiency appliances, companies throughout the green building value chain will innovate with a focus on energy efficiency.

The soon to be launched environmental network is partnering with YouTube to hold video auditions to find one student from each major U.S. college to be a correspondent for Mother Nature Network in 2009. MNN’s college reporters will be highlighted contributors able to cover environmental topics in what many expect to be an exciting year for environmental causes once President-elect Obama takes office.

In addition to being a highlighted contributor on MNN, the winning correspondents will receive a “Flip Ultra” video camcorder, and the top five correspondents will be selected to participate in an exclusive, all-expense paid summit where they will share ideas with top environmentalists, business leaders, scientists and entertainers.
